Healthy Church Assessment

Author and Educator, Dr. Rod Dempsey, developed a Church Health Assessment for pastors or church leaders to gauge the vitality of their church.

In the same way one ascertains the health of the human body, it is possible to gain an idea of the health of the body of Christ. This assessment does not serve as any person’s or any church’s judge. This is offered as a possible exercise to help your church, or any church, grow healthier.

INSTRUCTIONS: Rate each statement on a scale of 1 to 5 – Add all 20 areas for an overall total

Overall health of the church is: _____________

Our church is a place:

  1. Where the gospel is being proclaimed by word and deed
  2. Where new believers are baptized on a weekly basis
  3. Where new believers are growing in their ability to surrender and sacrifice for the kingdom
  4. Where new believers are intentionally and individually nurtured and developed
  5. Where believers are willingly investing their financial resources in the Kingdom of God
  6. Where the “whole counsel of God” is being taught with a view toward application even to the point of church discipline
  7. Where the leaders see their role as equipping and empowering the saints
  8. Where the saints are growing in maturity (connecting them to Jesus through the disciplines)
  9. Where the saints are growing in unity and love for one another
  10. Where the saints are encouraged to discover their Spiritual gifts
  11. Where a majority of the saints are using their gifts “properly” (according to God’s design)
  12. Where relational groups are intentionally developed and growing in their love for one another (the one another’s are happening)
  13. Where relational groups are lovingly sharing their lives and the gospel with unbelievers (living on mission in community)
  14. Where passionate prayer is continually being offered up for the lost and for laborers
  15. Where leaders for the Great Commission are intentionally being developed
  16. Where relational groups are multiplying new leaders and new groups
  17. Where worship occurs at the individual level and it is powerfully manifested when the body gathers together
  18. Where the poor and “least of these” is intentionally being ministered to
  19. Where the mission of Christ is being accomplished locally, regionally, nationally and globally by members from within the local body
  20. Where new churches are being planted as a result of effective discipleship and effective leadership development
